Forte, defense turn it on as Bears shock Colts 29-13
The victory before a national-television audience served notice that the Bears are over their Super Bowl hangover. "This is the way you want to start off your season," coach Lovie Smith said.
INDIANAPOLIS -- The outcome seemed glumly predictable when the schedule was first released and the Bears were sentenced to a season-opening game against the Indianapolis Colts in the debut of Lucus Oil Stadium. How far have the once-mighty Bears fallen that they were suddenly perceived as the hopeless directional school invited to be sacrificed at homecoming?
INDIANAPOLIS -- The only area that had more questions surrounding it than the Bears' defense was the offensive line -- and you don't have to watch the tape to get a feel for how it performed Sunday.
Sunday's stars
PASSING* Donovan McNabb,Eagles, threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns in Philadelphia's 38-3 win over St. Louis.
INDIANAPOLIS -- Joyous Bears players could be heard before they could be seen as they walked through the tunnel to the visitors' locker room Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium after a 29-13 season-opening thrashing of the Colts.
Rookie Forte, defense star as Bears shock Colts 29-13
INDIANAPOLIS — Rookie running back Matt Forte proved he could hit the home run and take the big hit and gave you reason to believe Lovie Smith’s bus has been fixed, you know the one they get off of running. Forte rushed for 123 yards in his debut on 23 attempts, darting 50 yards for a touchdown on his fourth carry. Meanwhile, Kyle Orton was as steady as anyone could have hoped for in spreading the ball around.
Damned if they don't, defense must rise up
Brad Biggs: The quarterback derby. Brian Urlacher's contract. Devin Hester's holdout-turned-into-a-contract. Chris Williams' achy, breaky back.
Left is all right with St. Clair
You might not think much of John St. Clair as a left tackle, but it's at least worth noting that is the first position the St. Louis Rams thought of for him when he was drafted eight years ago. A third-round pick from Virginia, St. Clair's first job with the Rams was backing up Orlando Pace. No, it didn't allow for much of an opportunity to get on the field right away, but that's where the Rams figured he could develop at the start.
